There was a time when I thought feeling exhausted was just part of life. In my 30s, I was constantly run-down, and catching every bug that crossed my path. GP tests always came back “normal,” but I knew something wasn’t right. Looking back, my health was simply mirroring my lifestyle - fast food, crash diets, and zero exercise. No wonder I felt awful!
Then came motherhood, and with it, a wake-up call. My eldest son was diagnosed with autism, and my inner geek kicked in. I threw myself into research, determined to find ways to support my beautiful boy. What I discovered was mind-blowing (but in hindsight really obvious) - nutrition had the power to influence not only his symptoms but the overall health of my entire family.
At first, the volume of information was overwhelming. So much of it was contradictory, and a lot of the "quick fixes" were unrealistic. But something clicked. I knew I had found my passion, and that I wanted to help others navigate their own health challenges. Losing my dad to colon cancer was the final push I needed to start years of studying to get my DipION in Nutritional Therapy at the prestigious Institute for Optimum Nutrition.
How Nutrition Transformed My Health
The changes I made to my diet and lifestyle were nothing short of life-changing. That relentless exhaustion? Gone. The constant colds? A thing of the past. For the first time in years, I felt truly energized, strong, and motivated.
And then came something even more shocking... I actually started enjoying exercise! (My old PE teachers would spit their tea out at this!) From someone who avoided the gym at all costs, I went on to take part in various running events, working my way up to a full marathon, sprint triathlons, and most recently, I completed my first Hyrox.
Of course, with training came new questions – how could I fuel my body properly to maximise my time in the gym? Why was I feeling so wiped out after workouts? How could I use nutrition for fitness and energy? And as I navigated perimenopause, how could I adapt my nutrition to support the changes in my body, energy levels, and recovery? Nutrition became the missing puzzle piece, and I knew I wanted to help recreational athletes like me figure it out too.
